Sports day at UAE schools: kit, heat and a calm morning plan

By Marie Adly · 24 October 2026

The email arrives on a Sunday night. Sports day is this week, your child is in the blue house, they need a coloured T-shirt, a cap, a named water bottle, sunscreen applied at home and a healthy snack. Parents are welcome from a set time. Then a second email changes the start time, and the class WhatsApp group fills up with forty questions about whether a navy shirt counts as blue.

This guide pulls the usual sports day requests into one checklist, adds heat safety advice from UAE health authorities, and gives you a short plan for the night before and the morning itself.

When sports day happens at UAE schools

Most UAE schools hold outdoor sports days in the cooler months, so the season tends to cluster in the second and third terms. Every school sets its own date, and many split the day by phase, so Foundation Stage, primary and secondary may each have a different morning. Check with your school for the exact date, the start time and whether parents can attend. The school calendar and the weekly newsletter are the usual places it appears first.

The sports day kit checklist

Schools vary, but these are the items that come up again and again in sports day letters.

  1. House colour T-shirt, or the PE kit with a house band. Check whether the school sells house shirts or whether any plain shirt in the colour is fine.
  2. PE shorts or tracksuit bottoms, depending on age and school policy.
  3. Trainers that are already worn in. Sports day is not the day for new shoes.
  4. A sun hat or cap. Many schools follow a no hat, no play rule outdoors.
  5. A large refillable water bottle, named, filled with water.
  6. Sunscreen applied at home before school. Younger children often cannot reapply on their own.
  7. A healthy snack that fits the school food policy, such as fruit, vegetable sticks or a wholegrain sandwich.
  8. A small towel or face cloth that can be wetted for cooling.
  9. Any medication your child needs, such as an inhaler, handed to the class teacher or nurse with a note.
  10. A spare top for older children who will be outside most of the morning.

Label everything. On sports day, every cap and bottle looks the same.

Heat safety for children on sports day

Even in the cooler months, a UAE morning in the sun can be warm, and children running races in house colours get hot quickly. The Early Childhood Authority Summer Safety Guide gives clear advice for parents: use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30, apply it about 20 minutes before going outside, use hats and sunglasses, take frequent breaks in shade and drink plenty of water through the day. It also notes that the hottest part of the day is typically between 12pm and 4pm, which is one reason many schools run sports day in the morning.

A few practical steps that help:

  1. Start hydrating the evening before, not on the field.
  2. Give a proper breakfast. A child who skipped breakfast and then runs three races is the one who ends up in the nurse's room.
  3. Teach younger children one sentence: "I feel dizzy" or "I feel sick", and tell them it is fine to say it to any teacher.
  4. If your child has a health condition affected by heat or exercise, email the school nurse a few days before.

The Dubai Health Authority Summer Guide recommends that children aged 6 to 17 get at least 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity and suggests exercising in cooler hours or in the shade. Sports day fits that well, as long as the shade and water are there.

Food and drinks on the day

UAE school food rules apply on sports day too. The Dubai Municipality Guidelines and Requirements for Food and Nutrition in Schools recommends water as the main drink in a lunchbox, and the UAE Government Portal: Nutrition in schools page explains that each emirate runs its own healthy school food programme. Sugary drinks, energy drinks and sweets are commonly not allowed, so leave the sports drink at home unless the school says otherwise. A banana, cut watermelon, cucumber sticks or a small wholegrain wrap all travel well. Pack the snack with an ice pack if your child's bag will sit in a warm spot.

If you are going to watch

  1. Read the timings for your child's phase, not the whole school's.
  2. Bring your own water, a hat and sunscreen. Parent seating is often in the sun.
  3. Check the photo policy. Many UAE schools ask parents not to post pictures that include other children.
  4. Plan the handover. If your child goes back to class after the event, say goodbye at the field rather than trying to take them home early, unless the school allows it.
  5. Check parking and gate instructions. Sports day often uses a different gate.

A short plan for the night before and the morning

The night before:

  1. Lay out the house shirt, shorts, trainers and cap.
  2. Fill and freeze half the water bottle, then top up with cold water in the morning.
  3. Pack the snack and the ice pack.
  4. Reread the latest school email. The start time may have changed since the first one.

The morning:

  1. Breakfast and a glass of water.
  2. Sunscreen on face, neck, arms and legs.
  3. Cap on head or in the bag.
  4. Medication and the nurse note in the front pocket.

Reading the sports day email without missing the detail

Sports day messages tend to arrive in pieces: a save the date, a kit letter, a timings update and a reminder the day before, often across email, the school app and WhatsApp. If you keep missing the second email, Hey Raha pulls school emails and messages into one calm daily summary with dates and to dos.

Frequently asked questions

What should my child wear for sports day at a UAE school?
Usually a house colour T-shirt or PE kit, PE shorts or tracksuit bottoms, worn-in trainers and a cap. The school letter will say whether a plain shirt in the house colour is acceptable.

Can I send a sports drink?
Most UAE schools follow healthy food rules that favour water, and sugary or energy drinks are commonly not allowed. Send water unless the school says otherwise.

How much sunscreen does my child need?
The Early Childhood Authority recommends SPF 30 or higher, applied about 20 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours.

Can parents attend sports day?
Many schools invite parents for part or all of the event, often by phase. Check with your school for timings and gate details.

My child has asthma. What should I do?
Hand the inhaler to the class teacher or nurse with a short note, and email the school nurse a few days before so the PE team knows.
