World Book Day 2027: the date, the £1 book token and easy costume ideas
World Book Day 2027 is on Thursday 4 March 2027 in the UK and Ireland. Children get a £1 book token (€1.50 in Ireland) to swap for one of the special World Book Day books, or to take £1 off a full-price book, with tokens valid until Sunday 21 March 2027. Many schools also hold a dressing-up day, so check your school's email for the date and what it's asking for.

World Book Day is lovely, and it comes with admin: a token to find and use before it runs out, a costume to plan, and sometimes a book swap or a reading event at school. Here's everything in one place, with a plan for the week before.

World Book Day says it gives out 24 million tokens across the UK and Ireland. The 2027 line-up has 12 titles available across the UK, plus two exclusive books for Ireland, a Welsh-language title and, for the first time, three Scottish Gaelic titles.
The £1 book token: how it works
- Where it comes from. Schools and early years settings hand out the tokens, usually in the weeks before World Book Day. World Book Day also offers digital tokens on its website.
- What you can get. Swap the token for one of the World Book Day £1 books for free at a participating bookseller, or use it to get £1 off any full-price book.
- Where you can't use it. Tokens can't be used for online purchases, so plan a trip to a shop.
- The deadline. Sunday 21 March 2027. Use it early for the best choice of titles.
Tip: as soon as the token comes home, take a photo of it and put it somewhere you'll see it. A token in the bottom of a book bag is easy to forget.
Costumes: what schools usually ask for
Dressing up is up to each school, and World Book Day's own guidance to teachers is clear that there should be no pressure on families. Things to look for in the school's email:
- The date. Usually Thursday 4 March, but a school can hold its dressing-up day on another day or across a book week.
- The theme. Some schools ask for any book character, others a theme, a favourite word, or pyjamas with a bedtime book.
- Bring the book. Some schools ask children to bring the book their costume comes from, so they can talk about it.
- Practical rules. Some schools set rules about footwear, props or face paint. The letter will say.
Easy, low-cost costume ideas
World Book Day's guidance suggests children can represent a character with three simple items, and that pyjamas or everyday clothes are fine. Some ideas built on that:
- Start with the wardrobe. A stripy top, a hat or a coloured jumper is often the core of a famous character.
- Add one clear prop. A paper badge, a homemade sign or a cardboard accessory tells everyone who they are.
- Use the book. Carrying the book itself makes almost any outfit work.
- Pyjamas and a bedtime story are an easy option if your school allows it.
- Swap, don't buy. World Book Day offers costume swap posters to schools, so ask whether yours is running one.
- Ask your child first. The character matters more to them than the outfit.
World Book Day publishes a free low-cost dressing-up pack for the £1 books. The 2026 pack is online now, and the 2027 resources are due in December 2026.
When the school changes the plan, Raha tells you
World Book Day has a fixed date, but your school's plan doesn't. A school might move dressing-up to the Friday, add a theme a week before, or ask for a book to be brought in. Those details are often buried in a newsletter. Hey Raha reads your school emails, read-only. When the date or the request changes, she spots it, updates your family plan and tells you on WhatsApp, so the costume and the book are ready on the right day. Try Hey Raha free for 14 days.
If the newsletters pile up, our guide to too many school emails can help, or see how to tame school emails in Outlook.
If someone else gets the children ready
If a nanny, childminder, grandparent or your partner does the morning, they need to know:
- Which day the school is dressing up, and whether it's a theme.
- Which costume and which book go with each child.
- Where the token is and when it runs out, if they're the one passing a bookshop.
Hey Raha sends the person doing the school run their own WhatsApp version of the family plan, without fees or private notes. For keeping class chats under control in a busy week, see our tips on class WhatsApp groups.
