Guides for school parents

School fees in the UAE: the survival guide

School fees are most families' second-biggest expense after rent, and yet the way they actually work is something every parent has to piece together from scattered emails, other mums, and one awkward call to the finance office. Here is the whole picture in one place: what you pay, when it hits, the discounts nobody advertises, and a calm system so a deadline never catches you out.

What you actually pay (it is never just tuition)

Good to know: in Dubai, how much a private school may raise its fees each year is regulated by KHDA, and any increase has to be approved. If a fee rise letter arrives, it is legitimate to ask the school to confirm the approved percentage.

The dates that bite

  1. Re-enrolment deposits for the next year come around in spring, months before the year ends, and quietly hold your child's seat. Miss the window at an oversubscribed school and the seat can go to the waitlist.
  2. Term fees are due before or at the start of each term. The reminder emails land in the same inbox flood as the newsletters and the bake-sale notices.
  3. Discount deadlines: early-payment and full-year discounts have cut-off dates of their own, and they pass silently.

The discounts nobody advertises

Many UAE schools offer more than they publicise: sibling discounts on second and subsequent children, early-payment discounts, full-year-payment discounts, corporate tie-ups through employers, and loyalty or founder rates that carried over from opening years. Almost none of it is automatic. One short email to the finance office, "could you confirm which discounts apply to our family?", is frequently worth thousands of dirhams a year. Ask every year; policies change.

If money gets tight

Talk to the school early, not after the deadline. Most finance offices can split a term into monthly instalments if you ask before the due date, and would far rather arrange a plan than chase a late payment. What escalates badly is silence: late charges, withheld reports, and in the worst case a paused seat. The school has seen every situation before; the email costs nothing.

The calm system

  1. Every fee email becomes a calendar entry and a to-do the minute it lands, with the deadline and the amount. An email you have read but not captured is the one that bites.
  2. Keep one running pay-by list, one line per fee: what, how much, deadline, paid or not. (Our three-list system guide covers this in full.)
  3. Diary the re-enrolment window for next spring now, while you are thinking about it.
  4. Ask finance the discount question once a year, in writing.

Or let Raha catch the fee emails for you

Hey Raha reads your school emails and turns the fee reminders into tasks with the deadline and amount attached, on your daily plan before they are ever urgent. Trip fees, term fees, the deposit email that arrives while you are on holiday: she catches them all, and fee details stay private to you, never visible to a nanny or helper.

Made in the UAE, so she knows FS2 from Year 1 and a term-fee deadline in AED.
