School Bus Rules in Dubai: Fines, Prices and What Parents and Helpers Need to Know

By Marie Adly · 20 October 2026

In the UAE, if you drive past a school bus with its "Stop" sign out, the fine is AED 1,000 and 10 black points, and drivers in both directions must stop. In Dubai, the RTA's school transport rules expect parents to have children at the stop on time, and the driver can take a child back to school if nobody is there to collect them. Bus fees are set per school and route: published 2026-27 price lists from School Transport Services (STS) range from about AED 5,200 to AED 10,600 a year for a return trip.

The school bus is wonderful until the morning it comes ten minutes early and your helper is still doing up shoes. Here's what the rules actually say, what it costs, and what to tell whoever is at the stop.

The school bus stop sign fine in the UAE

School buses in Dubai have to be fitted with an electronic stop arm that swings out with flashing red lights when children get on or off. When it's out:

These are federal rules, so they apply in Dubai as well as Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. Worth repeating to anyone who drives your children, including family drivers.

RTA school bus rules for parents in Dubai

The RTA's Guiding Manual of School Transport in the Emirate of Dubai sets out what parents and students are responsible for:

The school principal can withdraw bus service from a student who:

That "more than three delays" rule is the one that catches families out, so share it with whoever does the morning run.

What the UAE Ministry of Interior asks families to do at the bus stop

The Ministry of Interior's "Safe Road for Our Students" campaign, launched on 1 September 2026, gives this advice:

Your school's own transport policy may add its own rules, such as who can collect younger children. Check the policy and tell the bus supervisor who is authorised.

The bus time change usually arrives by email.

Hey Raha reads your school emails and WhatsApps you and your helper one plan for the day, so a new pick-up time reaches the person standing at the stop.

What Dubai schools and bus operators must provide

Under the same RTA manual, each school principal must:

The buses themselves must be yellow, have air conditioning set to no more than 24°C, be limited to 80 km/h, and be no more than 15 years old. Drivers need an RTA school bus permit, renewed every year, and must be at least 25. For the 2026-27 year, the RTA says seat belts are mandatory on school buses and it ran a 30-day school bus inspection campaign at the start of term.

To raise a concern with the RTA directly, the manual lists 8009090 and [email protected].

School bus prices in Dubai for 2026-27

There's no city-wide price. Each school publishes its own rate list, usually by area. Here are three 2026-27 lists from STS, which runs buses for many GEMS schools and others:

School (operator)Annual return fee, 2026-27Notes
The Westminster School, Dubai (STS)AED 5,210 to AED 6,155Five area bands, from Al Qusais and Muhaisnah to Al Barsha and Jumeirah
GEMS Cambridge International School, Dubai (STS)AED 5,755 to AED 7,665Six bands, as shown on the school's transport page when checked in October 2026
GEMS World Academy, Dubai (STS)AED 9,580 to AED 10,600One-way fares AED 6,970 to AED 7,700

All three lists split the year into three payments of roughly 40%, 30% and 30% (Sept to Dec, Jan to Mar, Apr to Jun). STS charges AED 300 per seat for booster pads and child seats.

So the honest answer to "how much is the school bus in Dubai" is somewhere around AED 5,000 to AED 11,000 a year on these lists, depending on the school and how far you live. Ask your school for its current rate list.

Paying for and cancelling the school bus in Dubai

The STS terms on these price lists say:

KHDA's 2026 registration and refund policy treats transport as an optional service. Refunds follow the terms agreed in writing when you signed up, and optional services paid before the school year starts are refundable as long as no binding third-party contract is in place. Ask for the cancellation terms before you pay Term 1.

Making the bus stop work for your helper in Dubai

If your nanny or helper does the bus run, she needs three things every day: the time, any change to the time, and who is allowed to collect on the way back. Put the bus supervisor's number in her phone. Agree what she does if the bus is late, and who she calls first.

Our nanny briefing template has a space for the bus details, and how to brief your nanny on the school week covers the rest of the week. School bus FAQ for Dubai

What is the fine for not stopping for a school bus in Dubai?
AED 1,000 and 10 black points. When a school bus puts out its "Stop" sign, motorists travelling in both directions must stop completely. A bus driver who fails to use the sign faces AED 500 and 6 black points.

Will the Dubai school bus wait if my child is late?
The RTA manual says parents must have children at the bus stop at the specified time, and if they're late, parents take them to school themselves. A student who delays the bus more than three times in a school year can lose the service.

What happens in Dubai if nobody is home when the school bus arrives?
Under the RTA manual, the driver may take your child back to school, under the parents' responsibility. Arrange for an authorised person to receive your child, and tell the bus supervisor who that is.

How much is the school bus in Dubai?
It depends on the school and your area. Published 2026-27 STS price lists for three Dubai schools range from AED 5,210 to AED 10,600 a year for a return trip, paid in three instalments.

Do I pay for the Dubai school bus during exams or if my child misses days?
On STS price lists, yes. Each term is charged in full regardless of how many days the bus is used, including exam periods.

Are seat belts required on Dubai school buses?
Yes. The RTA says seat belt use is mandatory on school buses for the 2026-27 school year.
