Thanksgiving break 2026: a US week planner and what to tell your sitter

By Marie Adly · Last updated: 22 October 2026

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and every US public school is closed that day and the Friday after. Whether your kids are also off Monday to Wednesday depends on your district, and big districts split roughly three ways. This page is the practical side: a week planner you can fill in, and a short brief for whoever covers the extra days. For the full district-by-district dates and how break patterns work, see our Thanksgiving break 2026 school dates guide.

Is your district off November 23-27?

Not necessarily. "The whole week off" is common but far from universal. Here is what the official 2026-27 calendars of seven large districts say, checked October 22, 2026:

Days offDistricts
Mon 23 to Fri 27 Nov (full week)Chicago Public Schools, Houston ISD, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Wed 25 to Fri 27 NovFairfax County Public Schools (VA)
Thu 26 to Fri 27 Nov onlyNew York City Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified

Everyone is back on Monday, November 30. Charter and private schools often run their own calendar, so check yours. Our US Thanksgiving dates page has more districts and what each calendar lists.

Three planning moves make the week easier:

What to tell your sitter or nanny

If a sitter, nanny or grandparent is covering any of the days, a short written brief saves a lot of texts. Cover:

The week before: what school will send

The days before the break bring a burst of messages: food-drive deadlines, class feast sign-ups, early dismissal notices and sometimes parent-teacher conferences. They arrive by email, ParentSquare and other school apps, and teacher notes. Put every date on one list as it lands. The school emails survival guide has a system for the rest. After Thanksgiving, winter break is only three weeks away.

How Raha pulls the dates into one family plan

Dates like these arrive in a calendar PDF in August, then change in a newsletter, a ParentSquare post or a teacher email weeks later. Hey Raha reads your school emails, read-only, picks out the days off, early dismissals and deadlines, and puts them into one family plan for each child. When a date changes, she flags it, and whoever helps with pickup, a partner, grandparent or sitter, can get the same plan.
