Thanksgiving break 2026: school dates, how long the break is, and Canada's Thanksgiving in 2027

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday 26 November. Every US public school is closed that day and almost all close on Friday 27 November too, but the length of the break is set district by district: some take only Thursday and Friday, some start on Wednesday 25 November, and others close for the whole week of 23 to 27 November. Check your own district's 2026-27 calendar, plus any early dismissal the day before. In Canada, Thanksgiving was Monday 12 October 2026; next year it's Monday 11 October 2027.

The three Thanksgiving break patterns US schools use

US districts set their own calendars, usually through a school board vote in the spring before. In 2026-27 they fall into three patterns:

Why the difference? A full week gives families a travel window and avoids two half-empty days of school, but it costs instructional days that have to come from elsewhere in the year. Two-day breaks keep the days in November and often leave a longer winter or spring break. Neither is standard, which is why the same question gets a different answer for cousins in different states.

Thanksgiving break 2026 in six large districts

Checked against each district's published 2026-27 calendar on 22 October 2026. Charter, magnet and private schools often follow a different calendar, even inside these districts.

What to look for in your district's calendar

Thanksgiving week can hide a few extra changes. When you open the calendar or the school's November newsletter, look for:

• The first day off. Is Wednesday a school day, a half day or a day off?
• Early dismissal. Some schools finish early on the last day before the break. Note the new pick-up time.
• Teacher days around the break. Professional development or conference days on the Monday or Tuesday mean no school for students, even if the official "break" starts later.
• Election Day and Veterans Day. In 2026, several districts also close on Tuesday 3 November (Election Day) and Wednesday 11 November (Veterans Day), so November can have three separate short weeks.
• Where the calendar is official. The district calendar is the starting point, but your school's own email has the final word on early dismissals and events.

The week before: early release, conferences and food drives

The days leading into Thanksgiving are often busy at school:

• Food drives and canned-goods collections, usually with a deadline.
• Class feasts or "friendsgiving" lunches, with a sign-up sheet for food. Allergy rules apply, as they do for Halloween class parties: labelled, shop-bought or non-food.
• Parent-teacher conferences, which some districts schedule just before the break.
• Gratitude projects that need a photo or an item from home.

Each of these usually arrives as a separate message. Put the deadlines on one list.

Childcare and the school-run gap

For working parents, the extra days around Thanksgiving are the hard part, not the Thursday itself.

• Count the gap. A full-week break means five weekdays to cover; a three-day break means one extra day before the holiday.
• Ask early. Day camps, rec-centre programmes and sitters fill up for Thanksgiving week. Book once your district's dates are clear.
• Swap with other families. Two families taking a day each covers a Wednesday.

• Plan the screens before the break starts. Long weekends and travel days are where screen time quietly doubles, so agree a simple plan before the break starts.

Canada: Thanksgiving 2026 has passed, here's 2027

Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, and it is a general holiday under the Canada Labour Code. In 2026 it was Monday 12 October, which the Toronto District School Board's 2026-27 calendar, for example, lists as a holiday. In 2027 it will be Monday 11 October 2027.

What that means for Canadian families:

• Schools close for the Monday only. Canadian school calendars don't usually have a Thanksgiving week off; the long weekend is the break.
• Provincial rules vary. Thanksgiving is a holiday for federally regulated workplaces, but whether it's a paid statutory holiday for other workers depends on your province, so check your province's employment standards.
• 2027 school dates are UNCONFIRMED. Boards publish their 2027-28 calendars in the spring of 2027. The Monday holiday is fixed by the rule, but check your board for any professional activity day next to it.
• Canadian families in the US (or American families in Canada) get two Thanksgivings, six to seven weeks apart, and two sets of school dates to track.

Thanksgiving for American families abroad (including the UAE)

Thanksgiving isn't a public holiday outside the US, so schools abroad follow their local approved calendar. In the UAE, for example, American-curriculum schools follow the calendar approved by their regulator (KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi), and any Thanksgiving day off will appear in your school's own calendar. If it isn't there, assume Thursday 26 November is a normal school day and plan a weekend celebration instead.

A Thanksgiving week checklist

• Open your district or school calendar and note the first and last day off.
• Check for early dismissal before the break and any teacher days before it.
• Add food-drive, feast and conference deadlines to one list.
• Book childcare for the extra weekdays, or arrange a swap.
• Brief whoever is covering: days, times, meals, allergies, contacts.
• Note the first day back (Monday 30 November in most districts) and anything due that day.

When is Thanksgiving break 2026?
Thanksgiving is Thursday 26 November 2026. Most US schools close Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November; some also close Wednesday 25 November, and some close the full week of 23 to 27 November. Your district's calendar has the exact days.

How long is Thanksgiving break for schools?
Usually two, three or five school days. In 2026-27, New York City and Los Angeles Unified take two days, Fairfax County and Clark County take three, and Houston ISD and Miami-Dade take the whole week.

Is the Friday after Thanksgiving a holiday?
It isn't a federal holiday, but almost all US school districts close on the Friday, and some employers give it off too. Check your district calendar and your employer's holiday list.

When is Canadian Thanksgiving in 2027?
Monday 11 October 2027. Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October. In 2026 it was Monday 12 October. Canadian schools usually close for the Monday only.

When is Thanksgiving 2027 in the US?
Thursday 25 November 2027, the fourth Thursday in November. School districts publish their 2027-28 calendars during 2027, so break lengths for that year aren't confirmed yet.

Do American schools abroad close for Thanksgiving?
It depends on the school. Thanksgiving isn't a public holiday outside the US, so schools follow their local approved calendar. In the UAE, any day off will be in your school's KHDA- or ADEK-approved calendar.
