Why the dates are not all the same

Public schools follow the Ministry of Education calendar. Private schools, which is most of the sector here, set their own dates within a framework their regulator publishes each year:

Dubai: KHDA sets the framework, the school sets the specifics.
Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: ADEK does the same.
Other emirates: the Ministry of Education framework applies.

The result: two schools on the same road can break for the winter holiday on different weeks, and a British-curriculum school and an American one down the street will rarely match. A generic "UAE term dates" list you find online is a rough guide at best. Your own school's calendar is the only one that pays your deposit back if you get it wrong.

The three things that catch parents out

Staff and INSET days. The school is open for teachers, closed for students, and these are set school by school. They land on ordinary weeks with no national fanfare, so they are the dates most often missed.
