What to pack for the UAE school day

Two bags by the door, a child eating breakfast, and the small daily panic: is today swimming or PE? Did the water bottle come home? The UAE school day has its own packing list, shaped by the heat and by whatever the timetable throws at a Tuesday.

Here is the everyday bag, the day-specific extras that catch everyone out, and the honest way to stop doing it from memory.

The everyday bag

These go in every single day, whatever the timetable:

A refillable water bottle. The one non-negotiable. Fill it full; the heat here means children drink more than you would expect.
A healthy snack. Many UAE schools ask for healthy only and are nut-free. Pack accordingly, and check your school's exact rules.
A sun hat, for outdoor play and PE, especially in the younger years.
Their name on everything. Bottle, hat, jumper, lunchbox. Labelled things come home. Unlabelled things join the lost-property mountain.
A jumper or cardigan. The classrooms are air-conditioned and often cold, even when it is 40 degrees outside.

The day-specific extras

This is the part that trips everyone up, because it changes with the day:

PE kit on PE days. Some schools have the children come in their kit; others want it in a bag.
Swim kit on swim days: costume, towel, goggles, a swim cap if required, and a bag for the wet things after.
Library book or reading folder, due back on a set day each week.
Show-and-tell, news day or a themed dress-up, which arrive by email or in the class WhatsApp and are the easiest of all to miss.
