Gifts for kids by age, and teacher gift etiquette: what's allowed in the UAE, UK, US and Australia
The best gifts for children match their age and stage, follow the age label on the box, and don't all need a screen or a battery. For teachers, a handwritten card or a small token is welcome almost everywhere, but the rules differ: UAE Ministry of Education staff are not meant to accept gifts from parents, UK schools set their own limits, US public school teachers can be bound by state ethics law (Massachusetts caps individual gifts below $50), and NSW teachers can't accept cash or cash equivalents. Check your school's policy, never give cash, and keep class collections optional and anonymous.
The short version
- For children: choose by age and interest, follow the age label, and mix in gifts that get them moving, making or reading.
- For teachers: a card with a note from your child beats an expensive present. Avoid cash, and check the school's gift policy first.
- For class gifts: keep contributions optional, amounts private, and the gift from "the class".
- For anyone: if a school policy says no gifts, a thank-you letter to the teacher (copied to the head) is a gift they can always keep.
Gift ideas for kids by age
These are categories, not shopping lists, so they work in any country and budget.
| Age | Ideas | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 12 months | Soft books, stacking cups, rattles, textured balls, a bath toy | Check for small parts and loose ribbons; follow the age label |
| 1 to 2 years | Push-along toys, chunky puzzles, board books, shape sorters, a ride-on | Babies and toddlers mouth everything, so nothing small enough to swallow |
| 3 to 4 years | Dressing-up box, play kitchen or tool set, large building bricks, art supplies, a balance bike and helmet | Pretend play and outdoor play top the list |
| 5 to 7 years | Building sets, simple board games, first chapter books, craft kits, a scooter or bike with a helmet | Games they can play with you or a sibling |
| 8 to 10 years | Science or coding kits without a screen, harder building sets, strategy games, a book series, sports kit | Their interests are clear now: follow them |
| 11 to 13 years | Hobby kits (music, art, cooking), books, a watch, room items, experience gifts | Ask. They usually have a list |
| Teens | Experiences (a class, a concert, a day out), a hobby upgrade, books, clothes they choose | Vouchers or a planned outing often land better than a surprise |
Experience gifts work at any age and solve the clutter problem: a trampoline park session, swimming lessons, a cinema trip, a club term. In the UAE, our kids' activities guide has ideas for clubs and classes that make good gifts.
If the gift is a device, set up parental controls before you wrap it and agree the rules on day one. Our screen time over the Christmas holidays guide covers what WHO, the AAP and UK guidance say by age.
Toy safety checks before you wrap
Safety regulators in the UK and US give the same core advice:
- Follow the age label. In the UK, toys must be clearly marked with age warnings based on risks such as choking. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says toys with small parts, small balls and marbles are not for children under 3.
- Watch for button batteries. The battery compartment should be secure (in the UK, ideally screwed shut). If you think a child has swallowed a button battery, go to the emergency department straight away, even if they seem fine.
- Keep loose magnets away from young children. Magnets can look like toys.
- Buy from a seller you can trace. The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards warns that very cheap toys from unknown online sellers may be counterfeit or unsafe.
- Add the safety kit. A helmet goes with a bike, scooter or skates.
- Check for recalls on the UK government's product recall site or the CPSC's recall database.
Teacher gifts: the rules by country
UAE. Khaleej Times reported in September 2025 that the Ministry of Education's professional and behavioural standards guide treats a teacher accepting gifts from parents or students as a second-level violation. That applies to Ministry schools. Private schools set their own policies: heads quoted in the same report said their teachers can accept small tokens such as a flower, a bar of chocolate or a handwritten card, but not anything of significant value, such as jewellery or bags, and some ask teachers not to accept gifts at all. We found no KHDA or ADEK gift limit, so your school's policy is the rule to follow. Many schools now encourage class cards or PTA initiatives instead. Never give cash.
UK. There's no national limit on gifts to teachers. Schools and academy trusts set their own policies under the Bribery Act 2010, usually with a value below which staff can accept without approval. Two published examples: one trust allows gifts of £20 or less from an individual and up to £50 from a group without the head's approval; another sets £35. Above the threshold, gifts usually need approval and go in a gifts register. Cash and vouchers are often excluded, so check your school's policy.
US. There's no national rule, but public school teachers are public employees, and some states regulate gifts. In Massachusetts, the State Ethics Commission says a public employee may not accept a gift worth $50 or more given because of their position, and may need to disclose smaller gifts. Homemade items and gifts worth less than $10 don't need disclosure. A class gift worth up to $150 in total over the school year is allowed if it's identified only as from the class and the teacher doesn't know who gave or how much. Your district may have extra rules; private schools set their own.
Australia. Education departments publish gift policies for staff. In New South Wales, the Department of Education's policy says employees must not accept cash, cheques, money orders or cash equivalents such as prepaid debit or credit cards, must decline gifts that aren't allowed, and must declare reportable gifts; gifts above $50 face extra assessment. Other states have their own policies, so check yours.
Teacher gift ideas that work everywhere
These pass almost any school policy:
- A handwritten card or letter from your child. Teachers keep these for years. Ask your child to name one thing they enjoyed or learned.
- A drawing, a painting or a small craft your child made.
- A thank-you email to the teacher, copied to the head of year or principal. It costs nothing and can matter more than a gift.
- A small token where allowed: a plant, a flower, a bar of chocolate.
- A gift to the classroom, such as a book for the class library with a dedication inside. In Massachusetts, the ethics rules note that gifts to the school or classroom, rather than the teacher, aren't covered by the $50 limit.
What to avoid: cash, expensive items, anything that could look like it's tied to a grade, report or place, and gifts during exam or admissions periods.
Class gifts: how to collect without awkwardness
Class collections are common at Christmas, Eid, Diwali and the end of the year, usually organised by a class rep in the WhatsApp group. To keep it fair:
- Check the school's policy first, including any limit on group gifts.
- Make it optional, and say so in the first message.
- Suggest a range, not a fixed amount, and keep who paid what private. The teacher should only know it's from the class.
- Set one deadline and one way to pay, and post a short update when it's done.
- Pair it with a class card so every child can sign, whether or not their family contributed.
Our class WhatsApp group guide has tips for keeping collections and polls from taking over the chat, and too many school emails? shows how to keep a pay-by list so a collection deadline doesn't slip.
Gifts for teaching assistants, bus staff, coaches and your helper
The same rules usually cover teaching assistants and other school staff, so the card-and-token approach works. Bus supervisors and drivers may work for a separate transport company with its own policy; a card from your child is always safe. More on the school bus in our Dubai school bus rules guide.
For your nanny or helper, there's no official rule and customs vary by family and country. Many families give a gift or bonus at a festival that matters to her, or at the end of the year, and time off around the holidays is often the gift she values most. If you're in the UAE, our helper salary and visa costs guide covers the employment side.

Let Raha keep track of the collections
Class gift collections, Christmas jumper days, party food and the last-day-of-term early finish all land in the same few weeks, which is why I built Hey Raha. She reads your school emails, read-only, and you can forward her a class WhatsApp message. She pulls out the deadlines and amounts and puts them in one family plan for each child.
If the school changes a date, she spots it and tells you on WhatsApp. Your nanny or helper gets her own version of the plan, without the fees or payment details.

Kids' gifts and teacher gifts FAQ
Can teachers in the UAE accept gifts from parents?
It depends on the school. Khaleej Times reported in 2025 that the Ministry of Education's standards guide treats accepting gifts from parents or students as a violation for its staff. Private schools set their own policies; many allow only small tokens such as a card or a flower. Never give cash.
Is there a limit on teacher gifts in the UK?
There's no national limit. Each school or trust sets its own gifts policy under the Bribery Act 2010, and the policies we checked allow small gifts of £20 to £50 without approval. Check your school's policy, especially for group gifts and vouchers.
How much can you give a teacher in the US?
There's no national rule. Some states set limits for public school staff. In Massachusetts, teachers can't accept gifts of $50 or more given because of their job, but a class gift of up to $150 a year is allowed if it's anonymous and from the whole class.
What is a good teacher gift that follows the rules?
A handwritten card or letter from your child, a drawing or craft, a small plant or flower where allowed, or a book for the class library. A thank-you email copied to the principal is welcome under any policy.
What are good gift ideas for kids by age?
Soft books and stacking toys for babies, push-along toys and chunky puzzles for toddlers, dressing-up and building sets for 3 to 7-year-olds, kits and strategy games for 8 to 10-year-olds, and hobbies or experiences for older children and teens. Always follow the age label.
How do I organise a class gift for a teacher?
Check the school's policy, make contributions optional, suggest a range rather than a fixed amount, keep who paid private, set one deadline, and add a class card that every child can sign.
